Sometimes I am a little slow on the draw. This great picture of an Escape from Alcatraz swimmer was taken by Sophie Aissen
for SFBAYIMAGES.com last summer. We took a morning expedition to hear the 2000 swimmers in the water. Our hopes were dashed by the helicopter over head performing photojournalism, which turned out to be a friend that later in the day needed to be rescued from an emergency landing in the Marin Headlands. It was a busy, day, which is why the image never got posted.

DESCRIPTION:
Exploring Point Reyes - Northern California Pacific Coastline
Welcome to Point Reyes Seashore, . From crashing surf to the lighthouse that has guided mariners, to remote beaches and marine wildlife, to waterfalls meeting the pacific ocean to open expanses of grasslands and fogged in forested ridges and then views from above overlooking it all, this DVD explores Point Reyes Seashore. Fine art photography by award winning bay area photographer, Sandra Cannon, combined with an ecletic world cinematic style score, this 30 minute piece has an atmosphere of the natural rugged elegance of the historic seaside area. The music track is a relaxing fusion of world ambient light music with celtic and indigenous people influences like the sample song, music not necessarily associated with Point Reyes but on the level of inspirational scenary and atmospheric sense. The music also reflects the early marine explorers, settlers, native peoples, California hippies and those of us now discovering it.
The Point Reyes Peninsula is rich in biological diversity. Over 45% of North American bird species have been sighted in the park, and close to 20% of California's plant species grow here. The park was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. From macro photography to aerial, "Exploring Point Reyes" is an excellent gift for you or your friends.

Fire fighthing helicopters have been employed to ferry water from the San Francisco Bay to dump on Angel Island. Watching this process is amazing. The helicopter is drawing the water from a very tiny beach on the Belevedere side of the Island and flying it up towards Fort McDowell. I wish I knew the size of the payload. It does not see that large. I saw the fire raging last night. Some friends from SFBAYADVENTURES.com took me on their boat to get a closer look. Circumventing the the blazing Island, we saw tress ignite, swaths of burning and huge billows of smoke. Definitely not an average night on the San Francisco Bay.
