In the winter, just after the sun goes down, and the sky turns that deep shade of blue, it is a different kind of magic hour. My Grandmother used to call it l'heure blu, or the hour of blue.
It's hard to capture and usually involves being cold. None the less, I find it a regal time of day.

Its interesting what beauty one can find first thing in the morning. I think I can find beauty most anywhere at that time of day.

Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano (October 14, 1898 - August 16, 1970) was a California-based Italian American sculptor, best known for his large-scale -- usually granite -- monuments. His modernist work often featured smoothly rounded animals and relatively simple shapes.

Bufano was born in San Fele, Italy, but was brought to the United States by his family at the age of three. He spent his childhood in New York City and was educated by private tutors, eventually studying at the Arts Student League from 1913 to 1915. He first came to San Francisco to work on a sculpture for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, alongside Dirk Van Erp. Afterwards, he traveled extensively before returning to settle permanently in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Considered an outspoken radical at the time, Bufano chopped off his trigger finger and sent it to President Woodrow Wilson at the onset of World War I as a protest against the war. In addition to his work as a sculptor, he taught at the San Francisco Institute of Art (but was dismissed in 1923 because he was considered too modern), the University of California, Berkeley, and Oakland's California College of Arts and Crafts.

Some of his best-known works include the statue of Chinese leader Sun Yat-sen in San Francisco's Chinatown, his 93-foot (28 m) sculpture Peace in coastal Timber Cove (near Jenner, California) and his Bear and Cubs at Kauikeaouli Hale in Honolulu, Hawaii. Examples of his distinctive and large-scale work can be found throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is a Bufano Sculpture Garden at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Sometimes I am a little slow on the draw. This great picture of an Escape from Alcatraz swimmer was taken by Sophie Aissen
for SFBAYIMAGES.com last summer. We took a morning expedition to hear the 2000 swimmers in the water. Our hopes were dashed by the helicopter over head performing photojournalism, which turned out to be a friend that later in the day needed to be rescued from an emergency landing in the Marin Headlands. It was a busy, day, which is why the image never got posted.

And the fog rolled in. Certainly a change in weather.

Blue Angels Fly over Angel Island. Angel Island 6 hours before it ignited with wildfire. No correlation, just a before and after shot.

I am always sad to see the Blue Angels go because to me it means we are in for winter now.

Fire fighthing helicopters have been employed to ferry water from the San Francisco Bay to dump on Angel Island. Watching this process is amazing. The helicopter is drawing the water from a very tiny beach on the Belevedere side of the Island and flying it up towards Fort McDowell. I wish I knew the size of the payload. It does not see that large. I saw the fire raging last night. Some friends from SFBAYADVENTURES.com took me on their boat to get a closer look. Circumventing the the blazing Island, we saw tress ignite, swaths of burning and huge billows of smoke. Definitely not an average night on the San Francisco Bay.

So, this does have that feeling of the clipper boats of yore. Imagine the "Maltese Falcon" showing up on the Mexican Caribean coast with Cortez.

Tom Perkins "Maltese Falcon" made quite a stir on the San Francisco Bay. So many boats turned out to welcome her arrival the Bay turned into a washing machine of multidirectional waves.
It was all good clean fun as she toured through the Golden Gate, down the City front, up the North Bay, through Richardson Bay, back out towards Alacatraz and then finally settling in front of the tony Sausalito.

It's that time of year!

In an effort to conserve bags and limit waste, we are asking volunteers to bring their own bags (or buckets). We will also have some bags and supplies available.
Otherwise, bring good energy, the completed waiver form, and proper clothing, i.e. close-toed shoes (no sandals), sunscreen, hat, and layers.

A serious marine debris problem disproportionately affects San Francisco's eastern shoreline. On Coastal Cleanup Day 2007, 70% of 17,000 lbs. of trash was picked up on the east side of the city, but 80% of 2,500 volunteers cleaned up on the west side. We strongly encourage you to volunteer at San Francisco's most impacted places, and we can help direct you and your group to places that need extra attention.
