The Golden Gate Bridge, one of San Francisco's most famous Landmarks. Its a gorgeous deco design piece and is probably one of the most photographed bridges in the world. Photographers such as myself never bore with photographing it because the San Francisco Bay provides an ever changing backdrop.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean. As part of both US Highway 101 and California Route 1, it connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County.

The Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937 and has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco and California. Since its completion, the span length has been surpassed by eight other bridges. It still has the second longest suspension bridge main span in the United States, after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City. In 2007, it was ranked fifth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

Balclutha, also known as Star of Alaska, Pacific Queen, or Sailing Ship BALCLUTHA, is a steel-hulled full rigged ship that was built in 1886. She is the only square rigged ship left in the San Francisco Bay area and is representative of several different commercial ventures, including lumber, salmon, and grain. She is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and is currently preserved at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in San Francisco, California.
The Balclutha was built in 1886 by Charles Connell & Co. Ltd., of Glasgow in Scotland, for Robert McMillan, of Dumbarton in Scotland. Her namesake is said to be the eponymous city Balclutha, New Zealand, but her name can also refer to her first homeport, Glasgow, Scotland, which is a "City on the Clyde" - the meaning of her name derived from the Gaelic Baile Chluaidh. Designed as a general trader, Balclutha rounded Cape Horn 17 times in 13 years. During this period she carried cargoes such as wine, case oil, and coal from Europe and the East Coast of the United States to various ports in the Pacific. These included Chile for nitrate, Australia and New Zealand for wool, Burma for rice, San Francisco for grain, and the Pacific Northwest for timber.

In 1899 the Balclutha transferred to the registry of Hawaii, and traded timber from the Pacific Northwest to Australia, returning to San Francisco with Australian coal.

In 1902 the Balclutha was chartered to the Alaska Packers' Association. After having struck Sitkin island near Kodiak on May 16, 1904, she was renamed the Star of Alaska when bought by APA for merely $500. After extended repairs she joined the salmon fishing trade, sailing north from the San Francisco area to the Chignik Bay, Alaska, in April with supplies, fishermen, and cannery workers, and returned in September with a cargo of canned salmon. For this trade she carried over 200 crew and passengers, as compared to the 26 man crew she carried as the Balclutha. In 1911 the poop deck was extended to the main mast to accommodate Italian and Scandinavian workers. In the 'tween deck bunks for Chinese workers were built in. Her last voyage in this trade was in 1930, when she then was laid up after her return home.

In 1933, the Star of Alaska was renamed the Pacific Queen by her new owner Frank Kissinger. In this guise she appeared in the film Mutiny on the Bounty starring Clark Gable and Charles Laughton. She then eked out an existence as an exhibition ship, gradually deteriorating.

In 1954, the Pacific Queen was acquired by the San Francisco Maritime Museum, who restored her and renamed her back to Balclutha. In 1985 she was designated a National Historic Landmark.[1][2]

She is now one of the exhibits of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and is to be found moored at the park's Hyde Street Pier.

As well as being exhibited, she is host to a monthly sea shanty sing-around.

Hello, In November 2009 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. I began chemo on December 23, 2009 and completed the treatment On May 6, 2010. I am cured. A rearched treatment is what let me sail through a very aggressive form of cancer. Support for the science and research for new treatments and cures for is what will let countless others live through it too.


Since 1993, participants in The Leukemia Cup Regatta events throughout the country have raised over $3.8 million in funding for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to invest in research to find cures for blood cancers—leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma—and to help improve the lives of patients and families. This year the Leukemia Cup Regatta is on October 6th.

She speeds up to 23 knots and at her top speed has a range of 4250 nm. Her cruising speed is 19.5 knots. The boat was designed by Phillippe Starck, including a guest tender. The aft of the vessel has two hatches which reveal a wood paneled "garage" for three tenders. The "garage" can be converted into a disco, apparently. One room has walls covered in StingRay Hides. (Hmm.)

Windsurfer with Finesse



Windsurfer with finesse. I took this photograph in May 2010 after a grueling struggle with cancer over the winter. Most photographs of me on the web are now misleading as I currently have 1/4 inch long hair. I won the battle and so this was a great day on the San Francisco Bay.

The Barbary Coast Trail is a designated path that connects 20 historic sites and local history museums in San Francisco, California. Approximately 180 bronze medallions and arrows embedded in the sidewalk mark the 3.8-mile (6.1 km) trail.



The historic sites of the Barbary Coast Trail relate primarily to the period from the California Gold Rush of 1849 to the Earthquake and Fire of 1906, a period when San Francisco grew from a small village to the busiest port on the West Coast.



Sites along the trail include the Old Mint, a national historic landmark; Union Square; Maiden Lane; Old St. Mary's, first Catholic cathedral West of the Rockies; T'ien Hou temple, first Asian temple in North America; Wells Fargo History Museum; Pony Express headquarters site; Jackson Square Historic District, which contains the last cluster of Gold Rush and Barbary Coast-era buildings in San Francisco; Old Ship Saloon, once a shanghaiing den; Coit Tower; Fisherman's Wharf; SF Maritime National Historical Park, which maintains a large collection of historic ships; and Ghirardelli Square.



Each end of the Barbary Coast Trail is connected by the Hyde-Powell cable car line, itself a national historic landmark.

It is supposed to be building of Beaux Artes design but these ladies seem like they are from a different era. They most seem to be from the Helenistic period to me. Maybe I am thinking about a Fellini film. Maybe Caligula. Thank you for all your comments. Magic Rainbow Whale Blow. Two Gray Whales South of the Southeast Farallon Island. May, 2004. It is a rare sight to see the sun reflect through the breath of a whale out in the middle of nowhere. We were whale watching South of the Islands actually looking for dolphins when these two showed up and put a little fire on the water.
