Description:
Adults are 64 cm long and weigh 800 g. They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey. These are short-necked and stout herons.

These birds stand around. I mean motionless. They stand there even when not fishing. They look at you but they don't move. I always thought they were small until one landed right near me off the coffee patio at North Point Coffee in Sausalito. They look a bit like a penguin, though not in the same family at all. They look so sharp in the distance, but like a stuffed animal up close. They make a quok sound. Apparently their eyes are pink during breeding and yellow the rest of the time. To date I have only seen ones with pink eyes.

Where to find them in the San Francisco Bay Area:
North Bay, Sausalito Shoreline, Sausalito Docks. There is a rookery on the Marin Islands in the North Bay. Black-crowned Night Heron are adorable. To get the the rookery one needs a boat. Kayaks are best so as not to disturb the birds.
